How ByggVesta Uses AI to Optimize Energy Efficiency
Over the past year, ByggVesta has achieved an impressive reduction of up to 20% in purchased energy across its residential properties. The answer to how? Artificial intelligence (AI) – used to optimize heating curves, cutting both energy costs and climate impact.
One of the buildings utilizing this technology is Aurora in Nacka, where AI is now part of the energy optimization system
Traditionally, heating systems have been controlled using manually set thresholds that determine when and to what temperature heat should be supplied. Optimizing and troubleshooting these systems has required significant time and effort from energy engineers.
With AI, this process can now be automated, streamlined, and continuously improved.
Precision Through Smart Data
By continuously measuring indoor climate data in each apartment alongside outdoor weather conditions, the system learns to predict the optimal heating settings for different situations. For example, the ideal temperature curve may differ at the same outdoor temperature depending on humidity levels, such as between spring and autumn.
Faster Learning and Tangible Benefits
ByggVesta’s building stock is relatively new, and it can take time to establish optimal heating performance manually.
With AI, however, the system can analyze building behavior 24/7, even before tenants move in, accelerating the learning process. It can quickly identify imbalances between different parts of a building or flag apartments that deviate significantly in temperature or energy use.
This allows engineers to focus on actions that truly make a difference, instead of manually adjusting heating curves.
The benefits of AI-powered energy optimization are clear — reduced heat loss, lower climate impact, and decreased costs. We’ve even been able to detect and fix issues before tenants notice them, which helps us be perceived as a caring and proactive property manager, says Amine Asry, Technical Property Manager at ByggVesta.
Scaling Up and Looking Ahead
Throughout the year, ByggVesta has expanded the AI system to more of its properties, seeing rapid and measurable results — in some cases, up to 20% energy savings.
Ongoing tests are now exploring whether similar results can be achieved in older buildings by using exhaust air temperature data, even where room sensors are not installed.
I can really recommend this and similar systems for energy optimization. It’s easy to use, delivers quick and strong results, and makes our daily work much easier, concludes Amine Asry.
