Make Järvafältet a Metropolitan Park!

Have you heard of Järvafältet? It’s the vast green area stretching across Solna, Sundbyberg, Stockholm, Järfälla, and Sollentuna — home to nature reserves, beautiful deciduous and coniferous forests, historic farms, and wide open fields. It’s an area that could be an incredible recreational destination for residents across the Stockholm region, but its full potential sadly remains untapped.

At ByggVesta, together with architect Måns Tham, we’re advocating for Järvafältet to become a shared metropolitan park.

In Måns Tham’s concept sketches, the green corridors leading into the field have been reimagined to feel more inviting, featuring barbecue areas, playgrounds, sports fields, and community gardens. These corridors would not only bring nature closer to surrounding neighborhoods but also enhance biodiversity in nearby gardens and parks.

Some of the gravel paths through the area could be paved and maintained year-round to allow use by pedestrians, cyclists, e-vehicles, and skateboarders. A dedicated high-speed cycle path across Järvafältet could make it easy to travel from, for example, Rinkebyterrassen to Kista — transforming a daily commute into a five-minute bike ride through lush greenery instead of crowded subway transfers or highway traffic.

An attractive and accessible par, one that Järva residents can take pride in, is the best protection the green corridor can have. Who knows, maybe in the future people will take the train to Järva to experience the capital’s park life.

Historically, Järvafältet was planned as a land reserve for future expansion, and large parts were once intended for development. City planners of the time designed for a “rational modern human” who would move quickly between home, work, and the city center. The fact that the land is divided among five municipalities has also made it easy to travel around Järvafältet — but crossing it is another story.

Imagine the potential of transforming Järvafältet into a metropolitan park — a green space that unites local communities instead of separating them. With joint efforts from the municipalities, Järvafältet could become a vital link connecting the Järva districts, serving as a green lung rather than a site for development.

At Rinkebyterrassen, adjacent to Järvafältet, ByggVesta already has 223 apartments, with more on the way. On the ground floor of one of the buildings, you’ll also find Yalla Rinkeby’s café and training facilities — a social enterprise focused on empowerment and inclusion.
