In this block in Östra Sala Backe, ByggVesta has built two buildings: the white building and the yellow Kronhuset. Together they form a lively, urban frontage along the street. The block includes 132 apartments and three commercial units housing restaurants and a grocery store.

Soft greenery along the street creates a gentle transition from the public realm to the private apartments in Kronhuset. The south-facing courtyard features large patios, abundant planting, a sun deck, and a clear focus on play and social life. Next to the courtyard are a new municipal playground and a row of townhouses.

Apartments have a social zone – open kitchens and living rooms facing the vibrant street – and a more private zone with bedrooms toward the tranquil, green courtyard. In the white building, all apartments have a balcony or ground-floor patio. The yellow Kronhuset has no balconies, but offers charming gallery access (loftgång) facing the sunny courtyard.

The Architect on the Courtyard

The courtyard environment includes multiple meeting spots, lush planting, and open lawn areas. A central path links gathering places with timber decks and small pergolas. A larger bower with a long table and grill sits in the middle, alongside an enclosed play area. Multi-layered vegetation with year-round variety shelters private patios. Along the edges is a string of rain gardens connected by rills and framed by a mix of shrubs and trees.

Transportation & Public Transport

Buses to Östra Sala Backe are frequent – every ten minutes much of the day. The area is designed with a focus on walking and cycling routes, making it safe and convenient to get around on foot or by bike.

Nearby Årstaparken is one of Uppsala’s largest parks, offering something for all ages – running, outdoor gyms, play, picnics, and broad open lawns. There’s water play, climbing structures, trampolines, various swings and carousels, and a 4-meter-wide slide. A gravel BMX track sits alongside. You’ll also find running loops and outdoor gyms.
