Safety and Belonging in the Living Environment

At ByggVesta, we want to strengthen safety and social connection in our properties. This is one of the ways we contribute to social sustainability, which in turn supports both environmental and economic sustainability.

When residents feel a sense of belonging, they are more likely to help one another, share resources, and stay longer in their homes. This community spirit not only benefits the environment but also contributes to long-term financial stability.

Social sustainability starts already during the construction phase, when we design the foundations for safe and inclusive communities. Later, through property management, we continue to build trust and connection. By improving communication with residents, supporting local initiatives that strengthen community ties, and encouraging relationships between neighbors.

Our work began with a study conducted by Sara Göransson, Ph.D. and consultant, which provided valuable insights into how we can promote safety and belonging.

The study took a broad approach and included interviews with tenants about what they personally consider important for feeling safe and connected. Naturally, physical safety – such as living in a calm area, good lighting, greenery, and secure building access – was a key factor. But residents also emphasized the importance of relationships within the property, communication with ByggVesta, and our values as a company.

How tenants are treated, how we communicate in various situations, and how we build trust all directly influence the sense of security at home. The study also revealed that safety enables connection, just as community-building activities can in turn enhance safety.

We are now taking the next step based on these findings and planning for an exciting continuation of this work. Follow us to see which projects we pursue next.
