Reducing Climate Footpring

Climate

As a developer, we have the ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to both national and global climate targets.

Strategic Goal: Climate Neutrality

Climate change is severely affecting ecosystems worldwide, and extreme weather events are expected to become increasingly common, no matter where you are on the planet. This calls for greater resilience in the environments and properties we design and manage, while also demanding a reduction of the negative climate impact we cause.

One of ByggVesta’s strategic goals for sustainable value creation is to cut our climate footprint in half by 2030 compared with 2015, and to be climate neutral by 2040. Our targets are validated by SBTi, and our commitment includes reducing our direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by at least 42% by 2030 (compared with baseline year 2022). This target is more ambitious than the national goal of climate neutrality by 2045, which aligns with the Paris Agreement’s aim of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Our main focus is on reducing emissions, with strategies for balancing emissions to be developed over time.

That’s why we focus today on building climate-resilient properties, able to withstand weather challenges, constructed in ways that minimize environmental impact, designed with the most climate-efficient methods available, and prepared for resource- and energy-efficient operations with a low environmental footprint throughout their lifecycle.

Energy Use in Our Properties

A large part of our climate impact comes from the energy used in our properties. Our guiding principle is to build well-insulated homes from the start, with high levels of heat recovery. Where possible, we complement this with solar power. Each building is carefully adjusted before handover to our operations team, and energy performance is then optimized throughout the operational phase. This is not only about reducing overall energy consumption, but also about shifting energy use to off-peak times, using AI control, for example, to lessen the load on the grid.

Resident-Related Activities

Residents in our properties also account for a significant share of our total emissions. This includes household energy use, waste, and car travel, which are some of the more challenging aspects for us as a company to influence. By building close to public transit, designing inviting recycling rooms, using sustainable lease agreements, and providing clear information and support, we aim to make it easy for residents to make sustainable choices and live climate-friendly lives.

Climate-Neutral Construction

The majority of our emissions occur during the construction phase. We treat every project as unique, testing new technology and innovative solutions, using digital tools to support early decision-making, leveraging climate data to guide material choices, and rewarding contractors for implementing climate-efficient measures.

Our Roadmap

We have presented a roadmap outlining ByggVesta’s commitments and goals for reducing climate impact, both in our construction projects and throughout the entire value chain. With a responsible and sustainable strategy, and through collaboration with our suppliers and stakeholders, we are moving toward a more climate-neutral future.
