A new report from Bo-institutet shows that more and more young people in Sweden feel lonely and unsafe. Compared to five years ago, the number of young people who feel this way has increased by nine percentage points. At ByggVesta, we actively work to help young tenants feel a stronger sense of community and connection with their neighbors.
According to the report, home is the place where young people most often feel lonely — one in three respondents said they experience loneliness there. Students living in student housing are the group that reports the highest level of loneliness and also the most stress related to their housing situation.
When asked what could reduce feelings of loneliness, most respondents mentioned lower housing costs — allowing them to afford more social activities — but nearly as many highlighted organized social events and shared common areas as important ways to feel more connected.
“Student unions play a crucial role in the social lives of many students. They provide meeting places and events that are both affordable and relevant, giving students opportunities to connect and engage. This work is vital for counteracting loneliness among young people.” – Oskar M Wiik, Chair of the Stockholm Federation of Student Unions
